Australia coach Tim Nielsen says Brett Lee is in contention to play in the fifth Ashes Test after an impressive display against England Lions.

The fast bowler, 32, has not featured in the Ashes series after picking up a side strain in the tourists' first warm-up match against the Lions.

"As long as he's fit and the conditions suit, he'll very much come into contention to play," said Nielsen.

Australia have also called up Tim Paine as extra wicketkeeping cover.

Paine had been due t! o arrive next week for the one-day internationals but is neede! d now be cause of reserve keeper Graham Manou's hand injury.

Lee returned to action last weekend at Canterbury where Australia played England's second string and produced a fine display of seam bowling to end with figures of three for 37.

And Nielsen suspects conditions at The Oval could work in his favour.

"Historically, it's a drier surface that does bounce and carry a bit, and those sort of conditions can help the ball get scuffed up, which everyone knows it can reverse (swing)," he stated.

"When that's happening, Brett is as good an exponent of that as anyone in the world.

Meanwhile, Paine is the fourth wicketkeeper Australia have had at their disposal this summer.

Brad ! Haddin has played in three of the four Ashes Tests but Manou and then Chris Hartley have deputised for him as a result of injuries.

Aussies well placed for final Test - Nielsen

Haddin, the first choice, broke a finger while warming up for the third Test at Edgbaston and was replaced by Manou.

Then Manou injured his hand in Birmingham, forcing Australia to call Hartley out of club cricket in Chorley to stand in for the two-day match against England Lions, which finished on Sunday.

Australia have made it clear there is no suggestion Haddin will not be fit for The Oval.

Australian physiotherapist Alex Kountouris said: "Tim will arrive a few days early as a precautionary measure should Graham Manou's hand injury not recover sufficiently.

"Brad Haddin is expected to be fully fit for selection in this match."
